I was glad to hear that President Obama is not going to release the photos of Bin Laden. I know that there are many out there that want the photos released, but I have to disagree. The death of Bin Laden is still new and fresh to those people who followed and believed in him. There is still a lot of rage for the American people from this group. I feel that if we release these photos, it will endanger the lives of our troops that are out there now fighting for freedom and the end of terrorism.
Senator Carl Levine was quoted as saying, "I'd let a little time pass so that we don't play into the hands of people who want to retaliate with what obviously will be a sensational picture. I would not want to feed that sensation, so I'd wait days or weeks".
Another White House official said that he had seen the photos and described them as gruesome and not appropriate for front page newspapers. He said that it clearly shows Bin Laden with an open wound across his face.
Also, I really don't care for all of the critics and conspiracy theorists who want the photos released. I feel that they are selfish people, who will not be happy even if the photos were released in "long form". I hope President Obama sticks to his decision on not releasing the photos. Though in this day and age of Wikileaks, I wouldn't be surprised if they were.
Well Lily, you are correct about in today's world everything is being put out there. For one, the photos are already out... I have seen them and yeah, they are not to pretty. But from a Soldier's point of view, one that has "been there, done that", well they are all the same. These pictures are no different then that of other "bad guys" that we have captured. One reason that they are more important then others is because they would mean a lot to most people. I mean look at the response that most of the world had, especially the United States. All the cheering and the "relief" of stress was felt all over the world. It has been 6 days since that day and we are still responding like crazy. For most Americans, the photos will be the last straw. Look at what happen to Saddam Hussein when he was captured in 2006. I was there in Iraq when he was Executed. When the U.S. Forces captured Saddam, it was a huge relief for most Iraqis, because he was a terrible man. Just like Bin Laden was to the U.S. So when he was captured and sentenced to death by hanging, most Iraqis didn't believe it would happen. But when the photos and the video was put out to the public, well that was what everyone wanted. And in the end, it was their closure to many years of torture and abuse.
ReplyDeleteSo even if it heals only one person, just one American by freeing him or her of all the pain and discomfort, to me, it will be worth releasing the photos... Who ever doesn't want to see them, don't... Who ever does, well you guessed it... just a click away.. they will be out very, very soon... Besides, just like my buddies say " We Do Bad Things to Bad People"..
I agree with you Lily, I'm actually very glad that pictures have not been released as of yet. To be honest with you I didn't feel any safer after I heard the news than before. For a moment I felt anxious that this war might actually becoming to an end but in reality that probably isn't accurate. I know that Bin Laden did alot of bad things;however, I have always believed that we should still respect people. Even if our own family members were horrible people would we want pictures of their killing published for the world to see? I know there are alot of different points of view and I respect each of them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you too Lily. There has been far too much ugly in the news. Yes I am glad he was stopped from doing anymore evil. I do nt rejoice at the death of him but at the fact he can't hurt anyone else. But there are many more out there that hate us and he has many followers still. Killing him was like killing a big mosquito in Texas...one down....???? how many to go? I feel like it was a very good judgement call for our President to make. If people want to see it, let them look it up on the web.
